A massive blaze gutted a five story Bur bank building in Lowell central district early today. Flames trapped lodgers on upper floors as men and women were rescued by firefighters. One woman died. three men and three women were hospitalized with injuries. Loss estimated at 4105000. The ruins were still being searched and no bodies found beyond the victim.
Reports from London indicate considerable loss of life in North Wales due to powerful storms affecting England and neighboring coasts. A New Brighton lifeboat rescued the crew of a British ship near Mersey after rough seas interrupted continental trade. Elsewhere in the storm news, severe winter conditions grip the wheat belt and a trolley wreck at Jim, Ohio injures over twenty, while Turkey secures brief financial relief and Roosevelt returns to Washington.
The Ithaca epidemic grows with about a dozen new cases and several suspects amid another death. Health officials cite secondary infections from careless handling of fever cases and local authorities, aided by New York nurses, plan district nursing to curb spread and make recovery safer for residents.
A large Carnegie Hall service marked the 200th anniversary of John Wesley. President Roosevelt praised Methodism’s founders and frontier preachers. Apostle Hopevelt attended from Washington.
