LW Kendall a bridge worker at Athens was crushed under ten tons of bridge plates for over an hour when frost struck plates toppled. His leg was badly crushed and amputated at Sayre. Kendall endured the pain as colleagues with a steam crane freed him, having previously lost sight in one eye from a steel injury.
Michael Battle, a leading Carbondale township figure and former township clerk, died yesterday after a pneumonia illness. Born in 1878, he lived in the township his entire life and for years ran the Cannon Ball hotel. He married less than two months ago to Als Jenne Carden of Carbondale.
A county commissioners report shows Luzerne County total taxable property at 140.5 million with 103 507 taxables and 12.18 million in money at interest. Wilkes-Barre dominates wealth and taxables, while Hazleton City and West Pittston also report large values. Hanover Township leads real estate value per taxable unit. Indebtedness stands at 270 thousand.
