Fire destroyed Dr. Talmage's Brooklyn Tabernacle on Schermerhorn Street after a lightning strike. A strong wind spread flames through the block, with firefighters rescuing residents including 80 year old Mrs. Julia Ames. Rain fell in torrents but rain provided little relief as the blaze raged and the building collapsed.
The Central Presbyterian Tabernacle in Brooklyn burned, leaving charred walls and a collapsed gallery. Firemen narrowly escaped as bricks rained down. cause is mystery with lightning favored by some. Dr. Talmage and trustees plan rebuilding with a goal of 100000 in contributions.
A massive blaze at Cook Brothers lumber yard near Serpent River Ontario destroyed fifty million feet of logs and damaged docks and warehouses. Strong winds and a large response by Sault Ste Marie fire crews left the scene with significant losses and about two hundred people left homeless, many to temporary shelters.

The colored porter H E Gibbs remains uncaptured after he shot Special Officer Thomas B McDevitt and his 15 year old son on Friday night in Portland Ontario. A liberal reward is offered and police pursue him through the city. The public outrage over the incident is intense and the wounded boy is expected to survive.
Luke Dillon asserts that Chicago politicians bribed jurors in the Cronin murder indictment and that one more arrest has been made. He claims positive proof lies with the prosecutor and predicts further sensational disclosures will convict the accused.
October 13. Secret conferences and rumors of further arrests unfold in the Cronin case. State's Attorney and associates meet at East Chicago avenue police station while defense lawyers remain in private contact elsewhere. Barber Edward Hoagland, a plot participant, accuses Kavanagh and O'Donnell, claims he only spoke after his mother revealed his ties to investigators. Hoagland must report to authorities every half hour. By 11 P.M. a new arrest and a concealment transfer to a nearby station were known, with two more arrests expected before morning.
In Dakota Prairie Wisconsin John Schmidt of Waseca Minnesota leaped in front of a passenger train and lost an arm. He was reportedly demented and seeking someone to kill him after threatening with a razor. His condition is described as hopeless. Authorities say reverses in Dakota Prairie are connected to his act.
General Thomas B. Van Buren former Consul General to Japan from 1874 to 1885 died in San Francisco this morning. He was brother-in-law of William Walter Phelps. Authorities noted his long service in U S diplomatic posts and his role in shaping early Japon relations.
Columbus report says the wife of butcher Frederick Feucht ran away with former policeman John Keller taking about $9000 in cash. Keller abandons his wife and children as the pair depart, leaving Feucht and others in shock.
In Jeffersonville near Louisville on October 13 James Bishop fatally shot Charles Enis at a dance. Witnesses say Bishop threatened to harm Enis earlier. Police investigations are underway as the community reels from the violent incident.
A Philadelphia Express train on the Pennsylvania Railroad derailed near Rayway New Jersey. The engine jumped the track and pulled five cars off the rails, tearing up the roadbed. Two people were injured as passengers emerged frightened, with damage stretching along 200 feet of the ties and rails.

New Years, October 13. Mrs Mary Al Barnett, wife of boxer Flory Barnett, and Daniel Murphy were found dead in a Harlem hotel this afternoon. They had apparently died from asphyxiation after Barnett had left his wife three years earlier.
