Pure Water Plan at Six-Mile Island Urged by Col Roberts

Col T F Roberts promotes a practical scheme to supply Pittsburg and Allegheny with pure water from the Allegheny River by diverting flow at Six Mile Island. The plan uses influent pipes, a fore bay, and a multi stage filter system of broken stone and sand, with wells sunk under the river to augment supply and an intercepting sewer to keep sewage from reaching the river. He argues the method is cheaper and more effective than alternative mains and insists the water can be clean with proper filtration and river-bank wells.
