Great St Louis Fire Destroys Four Block Dry Goods Row
Fire swept Penny Gentles store and four adjacent four story blocks on Broadway in St Louis until 10 am, gutting Crawford and Sonnenfeld establishments and damaging nearby firms. The blaze also scorched Captain Scadder's residence in Vandeventer place, with losses exceeding 1 million pounds and over 75 thousand dollars in the Scadder home. A later stationery fire at Levison & Birthe intensified panic but caused smaller damage.
