Extraordinary murder and lynching in Bastrop Louisiana
In Bastrop Louisiana on May 24 a planter’s manager Schlambiss Brigham was shot by an old negro in a field. The assailant then procured Colonel George C. Phillips, who owned the Island de Liard plantation, and asked to be hanged. Phillips helped tie the rope and the negro was executed by hanging from a tree limb.
