Paris hosts a vast opening as President Carnot inaugurates the Exposition with the American exhibit prominent among international displays. Tens of thousands throng streets in a carnival climate while officials note extensive damage from the dense crowds and illuminated decorations.
Judge J. W. F. White of Allegheny recounts searching review of Schad license bid and denies bribery charges while condemning councilman meddling. He says letters from Shiras urged favors, cites misconduct by Schad and insists he sought only lawful licenses amid political pressure and media scrutiny.
Judge White critiques the Allegheny Bar Association vote on Dickey’s resolution calling it insufficiently decisive. He cites Dickey’s friendship with Shiras and notes Shiras urges investigation to vindicate himself. White says he will not stay overnight and mentions writing to Mr. Graham before leaving Baltimore.
Harrissville reports Representative George Shiras asserting the judge targets him to silence the gunner. He demands full publication of his letters to the court with affidavits, defending his actions and urging transparency in the License Court probe.

Pittsburg Post Office Superintendent Malone met with Supervising Architect Winchester to discuss maintaining nonpolitical administration. He was advised to avoid politics in management, refrain from interfering with contracts, and ensure removals serve swift building completion.
Washington May 6 The dispute within Maryland Republicans over Internal Revenue Collector Calvin Gorman, brother of Senator Gorman, ends with his resignation. The department had no schedule due to Secretary Windom’s absence.
A Telegram from Washington on May 6 reports BE A Ford and secretary BE S Morrow of the Tyrania Railroad aging toward attending a meeting of the Interstate Commerce Commission.
A special dispatch from Charleston reports Rev J M Pollard, rector of St Mark's Colored Episcopal Church, calls for black self help and land ownership to gain independence. He advocates philanthropy buying five to ten acre farms with five to ten year payment terms, urging richer supporters to fund schools and churches. The diocesan convention opens in Aiken next Wednesday and Pollard is listed as a clerical delegate but may abstain.
Judge Simonton declines to move the Western Union case to the United States circuit court after finding it involves a forfeiture under state laws and remains a civil jurisdiction matter. He also rules electric light companies not manufacturing taxed, and Lackawanna Iron and Coal exempt only capital used in manufacturing while other property taxed. judgment entered against the company for 11,866.37 with state claims totaling 37,000 for 1887 and 1888.
Corning telegram confirms Harry Evarts press agent for Forepaugh circus likely killed in the Hamilton Canada rail crash. Debris includes cards and a letter to Evarts. he does not appear among survivors while Forepaugh officials express belief in his death. Evarts prior roles include fame as a talker with the Little Giant Orator title.
Wellsville voters approved repeal of the two year old local prohibition ordinance in a special election last fall but the dry council prevented action. The newly elected Council will repeal the measure, leaving Alliance the only nearby town still enforcing prohibition.
A mad dog scare along the Poca river in West Virginia spreads fear after an unowned dog bit 17 dogs a bull and a horse. The two larger animals died and livestock losses are feared as the dog population roams the area.
No boulangerist did it. Perrin, who fired a blank at President Carnot as he left the Elysee for the Versail les centenary, had been treated for insanity. Officials say his mental trouble stemmed from a fever contracted in the colonies.
In Scranton, M. Huber a leading railroad contractor, died by his own hand after financial reverses last night. In Pisins, Charles Oldenshaw, a well known local figure, was found dead this morning with the cause stated as suicide following personal distress.
The Irish Parliamentary Fund Association ends further subscriptions as of May 4 1886 with total receipts to date amounting to 163200 forwarded since November 23 1886. Secretary to Mr Parnell notes support for home rule and impending general election while praising President Eu Kelly and the association’s efforts. The letter signals a unified Irish stance and continued backing for Parnell’s leadership.
A 200 pound black bear driven from West Virginia swam the Potomac and roamed through Williamsport Maryland Greencastle Pennsylvania and nearby towns before being treed near Quincy eight miles from Chambersburg as crowds of hunters and dogs pursued the animal.
Two gangs pull down telegraph poles along Eighth Avenue and Fifty-eighth Street in New York. The heavy pole line on Fifty-eighth Street will close the street when pole chopping starts. Mayor Grant joked that his private telephone line was cut near his home on Seventy third Street.
An IRPECIAL telegram from Poncy Kerrimn New York dated May 6 reports extensive forest fires across the Catskill Shawangunk Fishkill and Boston Corners regions. Dry heat and rising flames have damaged large tracts of woodland while smoke blankets the Hudson area and pilots fear navigation at night.
Report from Chamberlain South Dakota notes white prairie schooners along the Missouri as farmers from Iowa and other states move to the Sioux reservation anticipating fast opening for settlement. They expect rich agricultural lands and a rush exceeding Oklahoma's, with vast tracts available.
London May 6 Reuters reports Germany may consent to reinstating Malietea as King of Samoa if the United States Government buys German plantations or guarantees their payment. Germany would also waive demands for punishment of Germans killed if relatives are compensated, and would not seek political preponderance.
The Court of Claims awarded Georgia 35555 dollars in a case against the United States. The state sought repayment of money advanced to the government during the war that was withheld from the state under the direct tax law, with judgment entered in Washington on May 6.
