The vote tied with Chairman Stamen casting the deciding vote against the measure. Robbins cites editorials and 3000 name petition from Westmoreland County while noting backing from county superintendents would push for calendar consideration.
The Senate Elections Committee will favorably report the Australian ballot bill with amendment. The amendment sets the 'age to vote' at July 1889. The bill also extends the voter's right to vote for whom he pleases.

Ottawa dispatch reports the engagement of New York Governor Hill to Miss Hotchkiss daughter of the US Consul at Ottawa. Consul Hotchkiss declines commentary saying Hill should know all about it. It is learned that the Governor and Miss Hotchkiss are engaged and she is expected to become Mrs. Hill at Albany in the near future.
