President Harrison reduced his public hours citing health strain as crowds swell at the White House. Advisers meet, cabinet members mingle with lawmakers and officials, while hotel lobbies brim with applicants for offices from Cabinet to low posts.
President invites Governor Alger to name the Solicitor General before departing to Detroit. Alger nominates his Detroit friend Colonel H. M. Duffield, a Michigan lawyer and Loyal Legion figure, longtime adviser and Chicago convention representative. Senators Stockbridge and McMillan seek Duffield’s appointment, supported by the President though timing unspecified.
The President hosted Indiana residents and visitors in Washington at the White House reception. He met callers in the Blue Room with Vice President and Mrs Morton, plus several notable guests including Scott Lord and Mrs Harrison’s sister.
Baltiorne March 7 Mrs Elizabeth Sands widow of a Revolutionary hero and sole surviving veteran of the 1812 defense of Baltimore marked her 100th birthday today. Despite age she remains active and enjoyed calls cards gifts flowers and a serenade by a 60 voice church choir. President Harrison sent an autograph regret.
Diana Douty marked her 100th birthday at her son Bainbridge Douty’s Charlton home Worcester Mass March 7. Dozens of relatives including grandchildren great grandchildren and great great grandchildren visited as she chatted warmly despite reduced sight and hearing and remaining energetic with daily household tasks.
North Carolina approves an election measure modeled on the South Carolina law requiring voter literacy and educational qualification. The bill imposes box voting methods and single ballot placement, aiming to consolidate Democratic control and limit the literate black electorate. Lawmakers argue it secures a future majority while opponents warn of civil rights consequences.
In New York a janitor’s son found a 40 year old woman dead in a hallway alcove with a man asleep beside her. The man, identified as William App, claimed memory loss and was detained while the coroner investigates the death. no suspicion rests on him.
Creditors of the Reading Iron Works met in Philadelphia on March 7 and heard director and counsel George F. Baer report liabilities of 31 927 783 22 and assets of 2 439 995 09. A three member committee was appointed to oversee temporary operations and appraise assets.
Ex Governor John A. Hutchinson W P Hubbard and Col J W St Clair represent General Goff in the Supreme Court demand for a peremptory writ of mandamus against Governor Wilson. Wilson appears and arguments will follow. A quo warranto filing in Circuit Court is noted but not pursued seriously.
The British vessel Eldorado of 270 tons burden has traversed the Panama canal from Aspinwall to Che, a distance of 15 miles. The passage confirms the ship moved through the canal from one port to another.
Dispatch interview with General Simon Cameron on his 90th birthday recalls his Pennsylvania political career. He discusses fond memories and politics past and present, and advocates abolishing Soldiers' Orphan Schools. His health has declined slightly with reduced mobility and back discomfort after a fall.
The aged Camden paper recalls Simon Cameron’s long life from early printing days in Harrisburg to Doylestown politics. The 89 year old veteran hosts visitors at his Susquehanna mansion and shares memories with friends and a Dispatch correspondent about his career and times.
The interview discusses political moves affecting a U S Senate seat, the Cabinet, and the controversy over soldiers orphan schools. General Cameron criticizes the orphan system as a humbug and questions why such schools exist, noting the State cost and age limits. A concurrent resolution agreed to summon Cameron for remarks after adjournment.
New York March 7 The grand jury considers whether indictments should be found against men alleged to solicit principal alatas against the Elevated road from property owners to claim damages. Lawyers charged with contingent fees faced questioning as Judge Gildersleeve plans to rule.
Robert Sigel son of Pension Agent General Franz Sigel was examined by Commissioner Shields on forged indorsement charges. He claimed Mrs Heinemann authorized indorsement and that Miss Honan aided by signing, with $80 sent to Mrs Heinemann and $20 kept as fee. Shields bound Sigel over to the grand jury for forgery.
The Joint Committee meeting at the Trunk Line Association approved a resolution against paying commissions on ticket sales. It declares such payments contrary to the association's revised rules and in violation of the current order, with the Executive Committee reaffirming the ban and directing continuation of the policy.
Grover Cleveland, now practicing law with Bangs Stetson Tracy and MacVeagh, starts his first day in a New York firm. He is named an honorary member of the Chamber of Commerce and the St Nicholas Society, dines at a fashionable club, and attends a Broadway Theater with Mrs Cleveland. He tours the 7th floor office, meets partners, and plans his residence while navigating crowds on Fifth Avenue.
Alexander E Orr nominated Cleveland for honorary membership while Colonel Fred A opposed the eulogistic speech. A rising vote passed 20 to 13 with several abstentions, and Cleveland was elected an honorary member of the St. Nicholas Society for the evening.
Francis W. Tasak died at 90 with an estate about 5 million dollars. His four daughters Ophelia Cuthbert Victoria McKenzie Antoinette Schermerhorn and Cordelia Chauvet plus a granddaughter Margaret Ives are named as principal devisees. Schermerhorn seeks equal share, claims undue influence, probate set for White Plains March 15 and will to be offered.
John Probanski was arraigned for felonious assault against Stephen Weiss at Jefferson Market Court. He told Justice O'Reilly he planned to kill Weiss and then take his own life after being kept out of work by a union amid a starvation threat to his family.

New York March 27 Ex Senator Thomas Platt leaves for Washington on the Pennsylvania Limited to call on President Harrison and to discuss the White House but also plans a Florida orange grove visit. His friends say he has felt hard done by the President but has not expressed personal displeasure. A likely conference may cover the Custom House and the Postoffice. State Senator J Sloat Fassett returned from Washington after a long talk with Piatt.

In the Philadelphia House the bill to legalize poolselling faced opposition from Mr. Brooks who moved indefinite postponement. The measure, defended by Mr. Fow, passed the second reading 53 to 0 amid comments comparing poorselling to church fairs and Third Street gambling.
