Special telegram from Philadelphia reports Austin Corbin will resign as Reading Railroad president in favor of A A McLeod the first vice president. Corbin, currently in Europe, reportedly sent his resignation to the board with a strong hint McLeod is his successor. a board meeting may be held early next week to act on the resignation.
Special Cincinnati dispatch reports a spirited river race between the sidewheel steamer New South from Cincinnati and the Fleetwood from Louisville. The duel began with rapid upriver sprints and included close passes, a nose-tied collision near Patriot Indiana, and spectators lining the riverbanks from Cincinnati to Louisville. Both boats chased back upriver with cheers and midnight reports of Fleetwood again colliding and disabling the New South, delaying further travel.
City of Mexico June 21 reports an uprising in Guanajuato seen as the start of a broader revolutionary movement. In Toledo on June 21 Judge Rix presided over the United States District Court trial of E B Van Hoesen former cashier of the Toledo National Bank charged with perjury for stating false bank figures. The embezzlement total reached 72500. He was indicted on 20 counts of embezzlement and three counts of perjury. the jury found him guilty on one count and not guilty on the other two. A new trial motion was filed to be argued June 30.
Jacksonville authorities post a $400 reward for the capture of City Marshal Wiggins after he assaulted Mayor McQuaid. The reward is payable upon delivering Wiggins to the Duval county sheriff. Mayor McQuaid remains in fragile condition following the incident.
SPECIAL TELEGRAM TO THE DISPATCH From Nogelstows June 21 Democratic delegate elections in this borough favored ex Governor Pattison. In ten wards contests produced Pattison leaning results with 15 Pattison and 7 Wallace delegates expected among 22 total. Country districts reportedly lean Pattison as well.
In Clarion county Democratic primaries, results are tight at midnight. Cribbs appears to lead Greenland for Congress, Wilson likely ahead of Neely for Senate, Hess possibly safe for Legislature, with Kribbs, Brinker, and Smiley contending for another seat. Sipler looks to beat Shannon for Prothonotary as Pattison delegates gain instruction to back ex Governor.
Somerset June 21. The largest vote ever cast at the Democratic primaries occurred today. Returns are incomplete, but the main contest shifts to the County Convention meeting on the 23rd, with power to elect state delegates, congressional and senatorial conferees, and a full county ticket.
