Residents at Dunbar crowded the mine mouth as rescuers dig toward the entombed Hill Farm miners. Engineers and doctors prepare for a possible alive outcome while workers extend the tunnel and monitor gas. Reports of sounds raise cautious optimism amid ongoing clearance and safety precautions.
A special telegram reports rescuers near the Mahoning Hill Farm coal mine. Miners trapped deeper may be reached after 12 oclock tomorrow. rescuers warned of gas and warned families to stay calm while continuing efforts. Beth Worman and Mine Inspector Keighley comment on progress and need for improved communications.

After 48 ballots Townsend 15, Jackson 15, Black 15, McDowell 11, Brown 4. A recess is set to continue after 10 tonight, with Beaver aiming to block Townsend and push toward a Butler Mercer Lawrence coalition.
The Vermont Republican State Convention opened in Montpelier with Hon. James L. Martin presiding. Carroll B. Paige won the Governor nomination on the first ballot by 3386 to 557, then was declared the nominee. The platform urged pensions, an election bill, and federal action to allow states to police intoxicants and other public health hazards.
The Prohibition State Convention ended its sessions with a platform calling for free coinage of silver and limited land ownership along with prohibition. The ticket announced includes Secretary of State Rev. M. C. Lockwood from Hamilton County and Supreme Judge O. C. Highland with M. Scott of Licking County on the Board of Public War. Judge Alvey orders L B Coulson and allies to stop using United Brethren Church for worship amid factional conflict at Chewsville Maryland. Regular trustees, led by Rev W D Barger, retain control and prohibit next Sunday service, communion, and feet washing to quell rising tensions.
