The Senate passed a radical free coinage bill after amending most provisions of the House measure. Democrats largely backed the changes while Republicans split, signaling a cleaving of party lines as supporters argue for monetary expansion and opponents warn of administration conflict and fiscal risk.

Washington June 17 Senator Morrill chairman of the Senate Finance Committee says the tariff bill has been closed to further amendments by Republican members and will be reported to the Senate tomorrow. The majority report cannot be prepared in time and will be submitted with regrets before debate opens. Morrill notes the debate may not begin until early next week.
The cloak-makers lockout widens unrest as Italian tailors walk out and more unions join in. The Cloak Cutters Association the Operators and Tailors Union and the Dress and Contractors Union merge and refuse state arbitration. General Master Workman Powderly and staff are at the Astor House.
Receivers reported that members of the Order of Railway Brakemen on the Reading road were told it was desirable they leave the organization. The move follows a similar order to conductors to quit their unions, causing unrest among railroad employees.
In New Caste on June 17 a cylinder of the Porter Allen engine burst with a loud report. Assistant engineer William Price was hurled into the pit and severely injured, likely fatally, with two or three other workers hurt in the blast. A massive machinery explosion echoed across the city.
Terrible uncertainty grips rescuers and families after an explosion at Farm Hill mine. Relief crews push toward the Hill and Mahoning shafts as smoke thickens and a ventilation fan is readied. Two bodies recovered will be buried tomorrow, with coroner Holbrook returning to hear the inquest.
The Knights of Labor executive board at ScorrpaLE Pa appointed R. D. Kerfoot and Peter Wise to assist the Hill farm calamity victims. All entombed miners were members in good standing and their families will be amply provided for. Some rolling mill workers may close to aid in recovery efforts. Damages suits may be filed against the Dunbar Furnace Company.
A mine explosion at Milesville coal mines near Monron Gaurna-Crryv injures Captain Samuel Carney and his two sons William and Caniel. They suffered severe burns to the upper body as a fissure in the roof opened, with injury extent not yet known.
The State Auditor uncover a $1,053 tax distribution fraud by Henry county auditors and treasurer. Auditor Poe will draft the amount. if unpaid, Attorney General Wilson will seek Supreme Court action. A $1,650 school fund shortage prompts criminal proceedings by School Commissioner Hancock.
In Jack county a feud between the Bowers and Walker families led Mrs. Julia Bowers and her 17-year-old daughter to visit Mrs. Walker. A struggle over a loaded shotgun left in Mrs. Walker’s possession ended with a fatal shot to the girl's breast.
A freight crew arriving in El Paso reports a cowboy reached Sepore barefoot and covered in cuts after fleeing a camp of ten men north of Sepore. He says Indians surprised the group last night and shot several, with three men killed and others likely dead. Posse hunts Indian near Lordsburg and Deming. Sepore lies 130 miles west of El Paso.
In Sunbury Pennsylvania this morning a failed effort to arrest about 60 excursionists from the Alto Coal and Iron Exchange met with defiance as the group locked in cars to avoid warrants for malicious mischief and boisterous conduct. Special guest J. Ratliffe of Elliott City Maryland was the sole person arrested.
New York June 17 Marion Manola secured a injunction from Judge Ingraham barring manager Ben Stevens of the De Wolf Hopper Company and photographer Henry Meyers from using her photograph in costume. The action seeks to prevent any exploitation or display of her image without consent amid ongoing stage publicity efforts.
In Montgomery County the Republican convention instructed for General Daniel H Hastings for governor and endorsed Quay. Scranton was renominated. Hensel gains Democratic strength. Delegates declared Hastings the will of the party, with resolutions praising his service and urging unity behind his nomination.
In Lackawanna county a Republican convention settled with Scranton’s nomination by acclamation after a late contest with anti Scranton forces. W B Christmas presided as permanent chair and J A Scranton secured the Congressional nomination amid a Connell faction letter refusal. County Commissioners and Auditors were also named.
Chauncey F. Black of York retires from the Democratic governor nomination contest and backs ex-State Chairman William A. Hensel of Lancaster. Hensel, seen as a Wallace Pattison compromise, begins with 30 votes: 10 York, 9 Lancaster, 11 from Berks Lebanon and Philadelphia counties.
The Democratic County Convention in Meadville nominated Hon. W. L. Scott of Erie for Congress. Also chosen were Hon. S. J. Logan for State Senator and W. P. Higbee, John H. Adams, George L. Holton for the Assembly. Delegates elected to the State Convention included Pattison supporters and H. J. Homes among others.
The Democratic State Central Committee chose Springfield for the next convention to be held August 27. C. W. Baker of Cincinnati named temporary chairman and D. S. Fisher elected as secretary. The report notes a strong county representation and mentions state officials including James P. Eagle as secretary of state and W. S. Dunlop in the auditors’ office.
June 17 in Birmingham, Alabama reports tell of incomplete census work as enumerators extended hours but missed hundreds or thousands. The Republican Executive Committee calls for informing the U S Census Bureau and demands an additional census if errors are proven, noting disparities between white and colored populations and concerns across multiple cities.
The Iroquois Club dedication exercises and first annual banquet were held. Patterned after Pittsburg’s Randall Club, it gathers leading Democrats, with over 100 members. Mayor Horace Rose gave the welcome, answered by R. E. Criswell. The banquet featured a refined program and extended late into the night.
Lord Salisbury reports to Sir E. B. Malet on a Germany Britain settlement redefining zones around the Congo Free State. England keeps the Stevenson road and frontiers. Germany gains coast lines and cedes Mandel and Patta. Zanzibar protection becomes exclusive. a 20 year customs tariff continuation is agreed.
In the Tenth Senatorial district a state Senate election centered on extending the Louisiana Lottery Company charter. Anti lottery candidate Decker won by over 1000 votes amid violence including a lynching of George Swayzie and a fatal shooting in West Feliciana injuring Dr. Eugene Taylor.
A mob mobbed Maria B. Woodworth the San Francisco prophetess in a Gamble street tent in St Louis tonight. They torn down the structure broke up seats and tents causing injuries to several persons during the disturbance following her failed predictions.
Cleveland is isolated as every switchman walks out, halting freight flows. Police protection may be used to move cars and supply mills, while Mayor Gardner weighs orders to prevent interference with workers and arming the city against possible clashes.
In Cleveland a wide strike by switchmen and brakemen disrupts rail operations. Pittsburg yard crews express sympathy with the strikers while authorities press for a quick resolution. Continued on page six.
