One Officer Foresees 100 New Vessels For Navy
A Philadelphia inspector at the Duquesne Hotel argues Congress will fund about a hundred new warships as the United States Navy struggles to recruit and man vessels. He estimates eleven thousand sailors needed by completion, with fifty thousand possible in ninety days if stations are opened. He notes most sailors are Yankees and urges broader seafaring promotion to attract youth. The armor plates for 18 inch guns are described, with plates about 16 by 7 feet and 18 inches thick at the top tapering to eight inches at the bottom, each plate weighing about 53.8 tons.
