L. B. France recalls a voyage to the Mexican border region featuring a deacon’s pulque misadventure at a depot stall and a failed quest to reach the famed Viga. The party rides streetcars, seeks directions, and endures a foul-smelling canal area while chasing Venice-like Floating Gardens and local curiosities.
The narrator describes a Mexico City approach by train with vivid scenes of street hacks converging on the plaza. A palace near the hotel appears plain outside yet interiors compensate, revealing barricaded rooms and a court like a fortress while the ambience hints at unrest and a guarded life in the city.
