Fatal Engine Test Collision Near Petroleum Center
July 13 This afternoon a terrible collision on the Western New York and Philadelphia Railroad occurred near Petroleum Center seven miles from the city. Master Mechanic Newman and Engineer Stone were testing speed when they collided with a southbound freight. Brakeman Martin Timlin of the freight was crushed between a flatcar and oil and died within minutes. Timlin resided in Albany and was the sole support of a widowed mother. Engineer Stone suffered a severed nose and was dashed through the cab window. Mechanic Newman had crushed hands. Engineer Van Dresser and his fireman were injured but not seriously. Several cars derailed.
