Two rival New York groups met President elect Harrison seeking cabinet influence for Platt and Miller. Platt’s backers left quietly hopeful yet uncertain, while Miller’s camp saw closer alignment with the mass party. A possible third nominee emerges as a compromise.
Harrisburg reports Attorney General Kirkpatrick released an opinion holding the Governor must issue a commission for John J. Metzger despite a pending contest. The ruling asserts no constitutional delay or 1874 act requires suspending a commission awaiting contest results. It argues Metzger’s title is confirmed by election and vacancy rules do not apply.
Mrs Rachael Suffert, housed in the Four Courts cell, is charged as a baby farmer in Cass avenue. Two dead babies found in her rooms, starving to death per Deputy Coroner Dunbar. A third baby died ten days earlier. living children in decay found on the farm. Mothers, poor workers, paid Suffert most wages. Coroner to continue investigation tomorrow.
A telegram reports the peace case filed by Dr. J. M. C. Drake against Lt. Norton has been discontinued. Norton has returned to his family in Elmira after the recent public excitement surrounding his return to Ene.
Forty seven ballots have been cast for the West Virginia State Senate presidency with a continuing deadlock. Senator Scott pledged to vote for organization tomorrow, while Republicans consider delaying until Silas Smith can attend. The House session yielded no new incidents as Secretary of State Walker delivered Kanawha county returns and electors met to cast the state vote for Cleveland and Thurman. Lewis Newman named messenger to Washington.
Alexander Sweeney, jailed in the Tombs since May 1885, faces trial for murder in the East Thirty-eighth Street dock killing of John Hannon. Prosecutors allege Sweeney persuaded Peter Smith to shoot Hannon after a quarrel. Smith was hanged in 1887. Sweeney’s conviction was reversed earlier. Sweeney, pale and mild, is defended by Howe and Moss. seven jurors were seated.
Rev Father McDermott of St Marys Parish in Giens Falls denounces the Brotherhood of Elks as harming the country. He calls on parishioners to resign from the order and warns against attending dances. Local Catholics deem the remarks in bad taste though some expect little effect on Elk membership.
Albany January 14 Assemblyman Endres of Buffalo introduced a bill to submit to voters at the next fall election whether the civil service law should be abolished. He notes many oppose open conflict with Mugwump papers and clubs and says the public should decide the question while shielding incumbents from direct vote.
A Toronto man William Winsor hunted through Burrawo with police for two months missing wife who eloped with John Bowen a Barrie Ontario shoemaker and Salvation Army soldier. Bowen deserted his wife after 20 years of marriage and left her with the poormaster before fleeing with the woman.
A girl named Mary Spitzer, confined by her mother for misbehavior, escaped through an open window Saturday night and wandered into the mountains near Leadville Colorado where her corpse was found, having died of exposure.
Harrisburg dispatch reports a late night House session with limited business. Rep Kauffman argued over timing of appropriation bills, defending investigations of prior spending while Chairman Dearden defended the Appropriation Committee. Special telegram reports a mob from Burnt Swamp near Red Banks invaded a residence of Mr Harp on the Carolina Central Railroad. His wife was killed and several others wounded. The incident follows renewed mob activity in the area. A separate item notes Miss Mary Webber named Deputy County Clerk of Madison County, first woman to hold the post locally.
