A religious tract bearing the message The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you was found with a 45 bullet hole. The text details a hostile Indian courier demanding withdrawal of all soldiers and peace talks only with the Vice President or the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Red Cloud is named as the source. Eoving bands threaten nearby roving persons with potential scalp loss.

Boston reports the second series of inoculations with Koch lymph starts at the Soldiers Home in Chelsea directed by Surgeon Samuel Nelson and Dr J Warren Achorn. Among 216 inmates many with consumption, only three lupus and phthisis cases were treated after screening.
A Pine Ridge special reports about 4000 Sioux, including women and children, encamped on White Clay Creek under Gen. Miles. Ghost dancing followers of Big Foot prepare to resist. nightly picket fire disrupts the area as some half breeds and squaw men flee toward the railroad, predicting a bloodier war than any in history.
A Baltimore stable on Calvert Street reports a fatal electric wire incident. A valuable mare and a big white horse were found dead after a tin spout and wooden casing near the wire ignited. Fireman West helped battle the blaze but was knocked back by the shock. An investigation blamed the spout over the live wire for the deadly electrical exposure.
Report from Yates North Dakota dated January 4 notes a large group of young Standing Rock Agency warriors have gone south toward the Bad Lands to join the hostiles. Rations issued indicate the band did not come to camp as expected.

In Los Angeles California Frank H Mandeville entered the room of dressmaker Millie Shaw in the Roberts block and fired three times. Two bullets glanced off her corset while a third missed. Six new smallpox cases reported in Houston on January 4, including five in the Stein family under guard. Governor says quarantine raised due to misconstrued orders, health department had quarantined towns with any cases. Two deaths noted.
At a New Year White House reception Sir Julian Pauncefote caused a diplomatic feud by flouting seniority rules and seeking precedence. Count Arco and Chevalier Tavera protested, and Pauncefote apologized. A second incident involved a South American attaché and a socialite, prompting diplomats to file formal regrets with the Secretary of State.
The Mexican Finance Minister submitted to Congress a plan for a new monetary system preserving gold silver copper and brass coins with the silver dollar as unit. Fractions will be 5 10 and 20 cent silver coins and the silver dollar will keep its form with an improved design.

The verdict cites intimidation to force African Americans off land to deter them from living or working there.
Meadville creditors may recover about 25 cents on the dollar from Delamater & Co and the Delamater family after appraisers list assets totaling roughly 62,000 for the firm and 11,000 for the senator's home, with total liabilities near 1.2 million. A compromise offering 50 cents on the dollar, 20 percent soon and the remainder over years, is anticipated.
