Reports from Columbus on January 2 describe Brice and Thomas jockeying for the U S Senate nomination amid extensive legislative arrival and lobbying. Brice workers back him with wagers of two to one while McMahon and Hazwell supporters arrange after-ballot calculations.
Special telegram from Springfield reports John W. Bookwalter arriving from New York and lodging at Lagonda House with John McMahon. Bookwalter says he is flattered by talk of a Senate bid but will not engage in a scramble. McMahon plans to let others fight while observing legal business.
Rome New York January 2 A priest Father Kelly of Oneida escaped an attempt on his life by a stranger at his doorstep. The assailant struck him with a heavy iron bar as the door opened and fled. Earlier October 8 an earlier poisoning attempt occurred.
The Welch National Eisteddfod closed at Central Music Hall with a $500 grand song prize won by Daniel B. Davies of Racine for New Heaven in Fullest Glory Shone. Ellinor Connelly of New York City won the prize for The True Position of Woman in Society. John Jones of Wales took the $25 poem prize for In Memoriam of the Late Rev. David Williams. Ben Phillips Choir of Chicago claimed the $50 choral prize. Miss Roberts of Minneapolis won the ration. T G Jones of Antrim Pa won the $100 critics essay prize on The Declaration of Independence. The Racine Choir led by 75 voices claimed the grand prize amid large audiences.
Anderson county distiller T P Ripey sold a two thirds stake in his Kentucky distilleries to an English syndicate led by N Hoffheimer of New York. Ripey remains manager for five years at a 5000 dollar annual salary. All whisky brands and rights are included in the sale.
January 2 in Crvcrys records Edward Sherman a 73 year old estate agent W H who shared a room with him. Sherman a machinist was awoken by a noise at his door and fired through the panel striking the man at the threshold. The injured man died at the doorway.
The Farmers Alliance, State Grange and Knights of Labor unite in a joint offensive and defensive alliance. The collaboration aims at cooperative business actions and defense, uniting over 125000 members from the three organizations.
Dublin report states Meinery editor of the Limerick paper was found guilty on intimidation charges and sentenced to three months imprisonment. The Appeal Court will hear further related cases, including mentions of Dust and Redmond figures from Waterford.
Reports from New York state that Colombian authorities seized ships off the San Blas coast down from Colon. New York reports the three masted schooner Veturia, bound for Madeira on September 7, is probably lost. Captain Maurice Franco commanded a nine man crew with five fishermen aboard seeking passage. The cargo valued at $8,000 included mostly fish. Built in Caminha in 1882, the 179 ton vessel disappeared en route to Portugal.
The San Francisco Supreme Court today ruled in favor of defendants in the long running case of Mrs D C Colton against Leland Stanford C P Huntington and others. Her husband died in 1878 leaving an interest in Central Pacific and related enterprises amid a multimillion settlement dispute.
EVANSVILLE January 2 The con ductors and switchmen strike on the Evansville and Terre Haute and Evans ville and Indianapolis road of the Mackey system persists with no talks between Serco President Mackey and the strikers. The yards remain deserted and freight cars fill side tracks, unable to be moved for four days.
About 200 feet of the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad main line caved in at Plymouth this afternoon. The cave has extended toward the nearby Methodist Episcopal Church with the ground undermined around the area. A large force of workers has been sent to the site to assess and address the damage.

The Reichsanzeiger reports Emperor William sent Prince Bismarck a New Year letter praising his work. The note stresses peace abroad and tranquillity at home, lauds the insurance bill and Bismarck’s cooperation, and prays for years of his faithful counsel in governing Germany.
In Philadelphia on January 2 an intruder entered a frame house at 206 Winter Street and cut the throats of sisters Sarah Kelly 81 and Ann Kelly 79 who were awakened. The assailant demanded money but none was found. Both women were taken to a hospital and expected to recover with care.
At the Montana Republican joint session Hon. T. C. Power was elected Senator on the second ballot. Power, a wealthy merchant and former governor candidate, succeeds in uniting the party amid mixed reports on the House outcome. Democrats met but adjourned after a single ballot due to no quorum.
