Shipping figures show Lake Erie ore and coal traffic in 1880s
Aggregate shipments of ore and coal to and from Lake Shore docks totaled 200 052 tons with rail deliveries and vessels ranging from small to large. Of 205 ore and coal carriers, 114 carried 500 to 1600 cross tons ore, and 51 carried 700 to 1400 net tons coal. Fully a substantial share of the fleet could load to capacity via the canal project to 14 feet draft.

Erie route canal cost study argues for expansion to Erie harbor
The report compares costs of Conneaut and Erie routes for a lake canal. It notes Erie would add about 15 percent in construction but attract at least 25 percent more traffic. It cites operating costs over 22 miles and argues strategic military value of unimpeded lake access and protection of naval interests.
