A G A Post investigation into McAllisterville Soldiers Orphans School reports 23 boys suffering mental distress tied to poor nutrition and blood impoverishment. Despite cleanliness claims, researchers note alarming behavior, with multiple cases of self harm and escape attempts, while diets show subpar bread and meals.
In McAllisterville the disorder among about twenty pupils is described as temporary hallucinations rather than insanity. The doctor says the students received medical treatment and are now clear minded, with four expected to show favorable reports soon.
A powerful blast in New York leveled a two foot section of David Stevenson’s seven story brewery on Tenth Avenue near Fortieth Street injuring no one seriously. In Wetzel county a rabies outbreak involves 8 to 12 mad dogs roaming fields and woods. Livestock on many farms have died or shown fits, with two children named Morgan affected. A widespread dog kill plan is set to curb the disease as Mrs. Mary Smith of Marshall county lies gravely wounded by a suspected mad dog.

At a meeting of the Advisory and Executive Committees of the Producers' Protective Association Orry reports a resolution barring sale of 2,500,000 barrels of oil held by the Executive Board before May 1, 1880. F D Newland of 1126 Lovejoy Street reports an attempted strangling of his wife by a stranger who tied a rope to a door knob. A milk woman found the rope, police deem the act an attempted suicide, but Newland doubts that explanation and has hired a private detective to investigate.
Harrisburg February 8 a staff correspondent reports Speaker Boyer was quiet about running for State Treasurer but stated he would gladly accept the office if the Republican party chose him. He offered no further comments on his prospects.
The Emperor will publicly promulgate a new constitution for the Empire of Japan in a grand ceremony at Tokio on Monday. The event will be marked by pomp and official observances.
Hargispore, February 8 report states that when the current term of Superintendent Higbee ends in March, Professor Atherton of the State Agricultural College is expected to be appointed to succeed him. Also mentions the funeral display for the late Senator Taylor of Philadelphia with his chair and desk draped in black and flowers atop.

Harrisburg dispatch reports a clash between the Pittsburg Storage Company and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania over the capital stock tax for five months in 1886. The state taxed the full $100,000 capital stock at $125 while the company argues most of the funds were invested in Ohio real estate, leaving Pennsylvania investment at $164 and a tax about 22 cents. Robert B. Frazer, Pittsburg, represents the company.

In Jones saloon Col John Atkins and Judge A W Rucker clashed when Rucker walked to Atkins and struck him. Chief Grady disarmed Rucker and arrested him for carrying concealed weapons and disturbance. The episode stems from the Blackburn Rucker duel controversy.
Officials will not issue a conclusive statement about the Thurlow gun until the star gauge measurement is completed. The process may take days as the weapon is measured every quarter inch along its length for any expansion. Wesley Osman, a wealthy farmer near Arlington, was awakened at midnight by disguised White Caps who bound his wife and son and demanded his money. They stole about $1,000 in cash and notes before fleeing. Osman’s son fired on the robbers as they pursued, narrowly missing his head, and search parties scour the woods for the attackers.
Fr Smith Ark February John Starr cousin of Belle Starr arrives with E A Watson the assassin and is jailed. Starr says he would have killed Watson but offers no fight. Watson 32 from Florida denied knowledge of the crime. Belle Starr was murdered Sunday near her Choctaw Nation home with Pearl Younger present.
