Senator Quay met with the White House to promote the nomination of William R. Leeds of Philadelphia for Marshal of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, a post vacant after Marshal Dill's death. Leeds had previously been rejected by President Harrison, making Quay's effort notable.

Paris reports influenza spreading along the Riviera as pneumonia mortality rises. Alfred Stevens, famed artist, grows worse after his wife’s death from the disease while caring for him. Mrs Stevens died after a brief illness and was buried today. Stevens, now 62, learned of her death yesterday. A new story by Robert Louis Stevenson starts in tomorrow's Dispatch.
The Queen sent Sir Arthur Sullivan a letter, written by her royal band, congratulating him on the success of his opera Ivan and recalling that Her Majesty urged him to undertake a grand English opera.
Chicago February 6 Judge Tuley issued a preliminary injunction in the Kean Bank dispute. Bishop William Taylor seeks to set up a trust fund of 3,878 intended for African missions along the Kongo river toward Stanley Pool. Kean and assignees Shaw and Jacobs are barred from disposing of bank assets as creditors may claim about 30,000 held in trust notes.
A London telegram reports a rumor that the Prince and Princess of Wales may visit Ireland within the year. The note appears in Dunlap's Cable with no official confirmation.
