Miss Lizzie Bender Wins 2000 Damages Suit

A jury verdict awards Miss Lizzie Bender 2000 against Mr Dignel for breach of promise of marriage. The trial before Judge White featured letters from Dignal and testimony from witnesses in Salisbury Hall and at the Cruikshank home. The defense offered little evidence and a motion for a new trial followed the ruling.

Agreement filed for probate contested as forged will

Probate filing in Fresno county involves a document described as an agreement with one clause offered as a testamentary provision. Brice Shields has filed a caveat alleging the signature of John McKay was obtained by fraud. The instrument details a plan where McKay bought the Common Gold Mine for his brother William McKay and deeded it to William E Brown of San Francisco to develop the mine with a capital of 1000000 shares. a $3000 payment to McKay was to be made from the decedent’s estate but could be deducted from the estate before distribution. The document was executed by John McKay, William McKay, and William Brown and witnessed by W B Stanley and John W Pearson.

Powers Not Guilty In Misdeameanor Case At Court

The court acquitted E. W. Powers coal operator of Tom's Run in a sealed verdict, with the county to pay costs. A second case against John Peterson, a foreman at a Scott township mine, was tried, and other individuals faced charges including liquor selling on Sunday and extortion. A long list of Common Pleas cases and a slate of criminal figures, including Speck and McGrogan, were noted in the session.

Postoffice Changes Speed Mornings for City Mails

The city will gain faster Eastern mail delivery as Altoona dispatchers join the post office. General Clarkson approved two extra distributors and two stamp clerks to handle morning trains, cutting local mail processing to minutes and enabling same day banking clearings. Postmaster McKean announced new staff appointments with $600 annual pay each.

Pictures Received for Carnegie Library Opening

Fears about President Harrison may attend the Carnegie Library dedication as the first exhibition pictures arrive and are kept under guard. The gallery opening on February 15 will use 400 tickets issued to council and city officials with remaining invites from Mr Carnegie. the hall seats about 1200.
