January arrests of suspicious persons by city detectives

In January the city detectives and Central station patrolmen arrested 97 suspicious persons. Among them 26 were discharged after hearing, 21 sent to the workhouse for 30 days, 5 for 60 days and 2 for 90 days, 17 sent to the county jail for court or inquiry, 11 released by the inspector, 7 transferred to Twelfth ward station, 2 sent to Morganza, 1 fined 840 dollars and paid, and 1 turned over to Cadiz O officer. Rector Samuel Maxwell Refuses To Resign

The vestry of Trinity Church received a communication from Rev. Samuel Maxwell stating he will not resign. He was given until January 20 to step down, but per his letter he refused. Dr. B. M. Haxwa, eye ear nose and throat specialist, located at 718 Penn street, Pittsburgh, is noted in the report.

Fire and arrest on Ferry street after major blaze

A mysterious fire gutted a row of old wooden buildings on Ferry street near First Avenue. The No 7 shop and adjoining shanties burned rapidly, causing heavy loss to Brown & Co and others. An hour later Patrolman Smith arrested a drunk who turned out to be William Brown, principal owner of Brown & Co, with confiscated papers and a handbill linked to the case.

Pine Gas Firm Elects Directors At Annual Meeting

At the Manufacturers Natural Gas Company stockholders meeting in the Germania Savings Bank Building on January 28, directors elected for the year were C Meyran B L Wood Jr James McCutcheon Henry Fisher M K Moorhead E H Myers and E M O Neill. The board named Meyran president Wood vice president Myers treasurer Seibert secretary and auditor and Niemann superintendent Low Pressure Division. Last year gross earnings reached 235149 38 with operating expenses 151839 97 and net earnings 83300 41. The plant expanded with over 37 miles of new lines to Washington Taylorstown Canonsburg Knoxville Beltzhoover St Clair Allentown and South Side Pittsburgh totaling 1136 miles. Two new wells were brought in, producing 100 barrels per day each.

Man Charged in Bond Death at East End Livery Stable

Louis Wagner faces murder charges after James Bond died from injuries suffered at McNulty's livery stable in the East End last Friday. Bond, 34, resided at 6024 Tee Teton and leaves a widow with four children. Coroner McDowell filed the commitment and set the inquest for 10 o'clock tonight.

Mr. Thos. B. Jenkins of Brookville Trombuil county Ohio was struck in the eye by coal fragment.
