Merrill, daughter of a Galesburg leader, had previously fled from home. both girls, under 17, escaped the convent wall with wardrobes and stayed at a local patron’s lodging before authorities located them.
A Pittsburg investor, Mr Scianion, struck in Wirt county at Burning Springs. The Scinnion well, 1 600 feet deep, has closed with leasing of surrounding land. A strong natural gas flow was also found near Pittsburg in Pleasant county on the Browse farm at 1 100 feet, enough to feed several furnaces.
In Middletown New Jersey on Christmas Eve at midnight Mr and Mrs Benjamin Vickier of Lowville awaken to a hand basket on their doorstep containing a three week old girl dressed in fine clothing a note attached to the dress signed by a well educated woman and promising a future for the baby while asking to be loved.
In Boston on December 28 the long search of the ruins ends as Ladderman Buckley and another unidentified fireman are found among charred remains. Shoes of a second man are located but identification is not possible, leaving families awaiting word.
A Philadelphia telegram reports Colonel Barry McCormick of Dauphin County has strong backing from supporters predicting he can unite the Black and Wallace factions at the Democratic State Convention. Backers argue new leadership is needed to curb Republican majorities and advance a non factional ticket led by a strong candidate such as McCormick with Berks County figures and local leaders backing him.
Mrs Emma L Shaw files for limited divorce from W L Shaw in White Plains claiming cruelty and assault on their wedding trip. She alleges he choked her for not changing her dress and struck her on several occasions. she returned to New York with her child carrying two black eyes from his blows. He denies and plans a cross suit for desertion.
The Cantara dispatch reports a follow up on the missing heiress case. A mole on the child is described as a distinctive identifying mark. Mrs Margaret Jordan, a Shoemaker’s wife from the Eastside, presents the mole as proof of her claim to a family inheritance.
A massive blaze in Yazoo Mississippi destroyed the Citizens' warehouse with 6000 bales of cotton and seven freight cars. The fire began around 1 o clock and burned for more than twenty minutes, leaving the building and contents a solid ruin. Estimated loss tops over 300000 dollars with perils to the eight cars reported damaged. No lives reported as lost.
The Sixth annual American Historical Association meeting began at the National Museum with President Adams presiding. Prof. George L. Burr spoke on The Literature of Witchcraft followed by Ex-President Andrew D. White on Catechism of Revolutionary Reaction.
George Tykle, an eccentric bathhouse operator, left an elderly farmer alone in a hot bath at 8 PM. The man died engulfed by burning water and could not free himself. Tykle is jailed awaiting a coroner's inquest set for Monday.
Boston December 25 Edward P Walker 55 a dry goods firm employee stabbed himself multiple times with knives then fell headlong from a fourth story window. Found in night dress on the pave ment he died this morning. Police deem temporary insanity the cause.
In New York City a Saturday night alleyway confrontation between two Italians, Viscenza Perrotto and Samato Segoria, led to Perrotto’s fatal chest wound. Segoria was struck by a ricochet or impact near a lamp post. police arrested the assailant and took him to the station.
Charles B. Flint received a Brazilian correspondent's letter praising how the American press covers the revolution. The message says U S treatment contrasts with Europe and will aid trade, steamship and cable links between North and South American republics.
Chicago December 28 State's Attorney Longenecker said he had secured evidence against four or five other men suspected of complicity in the Kowa murder conspiracy and might soon move to bring them to trial. He declined to name them at this stage.
An eight Black men accused of murder were seized from Barnwell jail by about 300 masked whites before dawn and shot. A statement from local leaders condemns the atrocity as a brutal, unparalleled act of mob law, while noting public indignation and unanswered questions about motives.
Brevontys, N Y December 28 Miss Annie Webster a 13 year old Baltimore girl married in Baltimore in July disappeared from her family after moving to this city. Her husband Henry Wellington 13 son of a lamp manufacturer at 449 Putnam Avenue reportedly left for Ohio to resume studies. The bride now counsels with a lawyer as authorities investigate.
NO TOWN SITE THERE Preneg December 28 Great excitement prevails here over a discovery this morning that about 75 settlers attempted to found a town site across the Missouri at the mouth of Bad River. A half breed detected them, fired and attacked, driving the squatters away. The lumber was burned and a column of flame and smoke rose as the assailants claimed victory.
New York December 28 The Erie Railroad dispute between management and employees may settle by midweek. Tomorrow unions and company managers meet for final decision amid talks in Jersey City. The grievance committee pressed four engineers over signing a book and urged abolition of the books alongside firemen and brakemen conduct.
New York reports Carpenter John E. Gardner and his family confined on Ward's Island as commissioners decide Gardner may land. A Star steamer is said to sail next Wednesday and officials plan to place the Gardners aboard Tuesday evening under orders. Special Deputy Collector McCiel questions the force used as Gardner asserts his liberty and rights.
