In Pernambuco a popular uprising forced troops to fire on riotous crowds killing or wounding sixty. The provincial governor resigned as order was restored and a junta was cheered. Separately Espirito Santo saw a revolution depose its vice governor, while Bahia faces a volatile, shifting government.
Charles H Coolman son of Hon D C Coolman prominent Ohio banker and politician, was arrested by Pittsburg police on orders from Columbus Chief Murphy. He aided by forged drafts to raise funds at Ravenna with Meeker as indorser, later fleeing before capture. Authorities report possible settlement and his return to answer for alleged misdoings.
Muscoch, I. T. L. Dec. 19. Word by telephone reports the Cherokee Council and the United States Commission have finally agreed on the sale of the Cherokee Strip for a sum of 9 million dollars. The agreement ends long negotiations over the land valued for its strategic and economic importance to both parties.
Captain J. C. Donaldson received a telegram from Wilmington Ohio announcing that Representative-elect Elias B. Harlin has publicly said he will support Senator Sherman. Harlin, a leading Clinton county farmer, had previously remained noncommittal and was not listed among definite Sherman backers. His announcement surprised Sherman allies.

A late night gas explosion at Saita and Fugassi’s fruit warehouse, 535 Liberty Street, triggered a downtown fire that threatened the Duquesne Theater. Loss estimated at 35,000 with most stock insured. several businesses affected and a mysterious man seen fleeing through a pavement car hole.
A massive blaze roared through a four story brick warehouse, with John Fite’s butter and cheese warehouses above and Daub Brothers’ cheese below. Fire crews from Amoskeag and others raced to contain the flames within minutes, saving the Duquesne Theater. Loss estimated under five thousand with insured property. Saita and Fugassi, fruit importers, faced large losses as California fruit stock burned. Police investigation follows reports from witnesses who knew unnamed suspects.

A young woman, Josephine Mallison, shot and killed John Hobbs at the Powelton Avenue depot in Philadelphia and attempted suicide. Hobbs, a commission merchant, had feared a jealous pursuer and planned to leave the city for the West. he died at the scene. The shooter was restrained by depot officials and later jailed. motive remains shrouded as the death inquiry proceeds.
