New York August 23 sales agents of six great coal producing companies met at the Pennsylvania Coal Company office and decided to restrict September output to 3 000 000 tons. This marks a drop of about 1 000 000 tons from September last year. Prices remain unchanged pending further discussion at a future meeting.

In Bourra o August 28 a Nickel Plate engine No 56 left the Chicago street roundhouse near Hagnburg street. Train No 24 approached on the crossing as the engineer reacted and fired men leapt. The switch engine was sent tumbling with steam, wrecking both engines. Both the engineer and fireman of engine No 140 suffered serious injuries and could not escape.
In Paradise New Jersey August 26 8 Philip Heinckle a German farmer deliberately burned his large barn which held the harvest of the season and then leaped into the blaze. He managed to drive out the horses and cattle before the fire consumed him.
August 28 The Department of State was informed by telegram from the United States Consul at Dolon that the steamer Act had left that port for the United States with yellow fever aboard.

James J. West former Chicago Times man visited Washington last winter and socialized with two Virginia daughters. He escorted them to New York for two weeks and stayed at the Fifth Avenue Hotel. On his return he summoned money from Fred A. Handy and telegraphed Chicago for funds when the debt was pressed. The money eventually came.
