The Canterstone Jail Witchcraft Episode Trial
Oliver Mankell is sentenced to three months hard labor for false pretences. A bizarre sequence follows with locked night cells, vanished guards, and inmates asleep in their beds as officials suspect hypnotism or witchcraft. The jam culminates in a chaotic chapel scene and a public confrontation among governor Paley, Major Hardinge, the chaplain Hewett, and warders Slater and Murray.
