Harrelspone August 21 A report that Kisner chairman of the Democratic State Committee will retire is contradicted by a conferee who says Kisner remains in poor health yet continues toward the September State Convention. Rooms are reserved for his stay during the meeting.
A Carro, Inc. circus at Metropolis unloading from steamboats and barges faced an angry elephant that refused ashore. Workers used pikes to prod it, triggering a rage that lifted its trunk high and sent it into the Ohio river. The man injured by the chaotic scene was hospitalized.
Saratoga gamblers face crackdown as police raid McCormick Welsh, Charlie Mahan, and Mitchel establishments. Warrants issued after waivers of examination. Bail set at 300 dollars each. Informer and Albany lawyer hired by Spencer Trask to shut down gambling. Supposed endgame aims to protect racing while risking clubhouse closure and track finances.
Washington August 21 The people in new Northwest communities seek post offices but delay stems from Public Printer Palmer neglecting duties and failing to supply necessary location papers. Congressmen blame him for the hold up as communities along the frontier grow while Republicans vow investigations next session.
As early as March Secretary Windom said he would not pay fancy prices for bonds. The Treasury policy aims to let money accumulate rather than pay high prices, with occasional purchases if holders accept terms. Acting Secretary emajor indicated the question of raising the price is under review by Windom.
A telegram from Boston reports Edgar A. Achorn, a prominent Boston lawyer, has won Mile. Zella, famed Norwegian soprano, in a high society match. Zella, early twenties, praised for a soul stirring voice, beauty, and presence amid applauding accounts of her stature and charm. The couple met in Norway last July and are now engaged.
In Frederickton New Brunswick on August 21 fishwarden Orr and deputies clashed with poachers Dave Moore and Donald McCoy at Burnt Hill on Southwest river. McCoy surrendered. Moore armed with an ax threatened officers, struck at Deputy Manser, canoe damaged, and escaped with about 50 salmon including a 40 pound specimen.
In Lompox on August 22 Mrs Maybrick is sinking and barely recognizable to her mother. The delay in granting a reprieve has distressed her friends. Decorte Matthews consulted with John W A C M P A nooner Ivan, a leading prosecutor on her trial.
New York August 21 reports one of five condemned murderers Giblin granted a sixty day respite by Governor Hill while others await appeals. The Tombs death row inmates endured prayers and hope as Justice Barrett denied Giblin a new trial and Albany work continued. Packenham offered encouragement, while four others awaited fate.
A man named L. F. ee, banker and owner of Hardin County Bank, was fatally shot during a hunting expedition near Eldora, Iowa, by his son. The incident left the family deeply grieved as authorities investigated the accidental shooting.
Detective Hayes arrested Joseph Popa a bootblack 13 after he told Coroner Schultze how a man in a white apron started a fire at Snyder's restaurant on Monday before 5 a.m. Popa described flames spreading from burning wood to a dishpan and broom before a passerby alerted police. Snyder denied involvement and was questioned. Popa was committed to the House of Detention.
Detroit hosts the fourth annual encampment of the Union Veterans Union with about 150 delegates from several states. Commander-in-Chief Asten presides as officers are elected including W. T. Clarke of Cleveland as Commander-in-Chief and Thomas Hy First Deputy, with General Alger delivering the welcome.
Five hundred Chelon Indians passed through EvLersport to Puyallup hop fields. While in town they bought whisky and four opened fire. Deputies arrested two during the clash, one Indian was wounded. Indians had been peaceful. whisky sellers bear no fault. The band continued toward Cascade Mountains.
Five Spring Valley women with infants sought provisions and clothing in Galesburg. The Mayor sent them to a boarding house. citizens' committee will canvass the area. The group represents families of Spring Valley strikers in destitute condition and seek aid from major cities in the state.
Purvis Miss August 21 Bod Renaud faced trial as jurors were seated this afternoon. Only seven spectators observed the proceedings amid weak local interest in prize fight cases. Renaud pleaded not guilty, witnesses were examined, and no links to the Mississippi prize fight were established.

Wheeling August 21 The Gubernatorial Commission resumed consideration of Kanawha county and threw out 36 votes for Goff, in addition to 20 votes rejected yesterday. This leaves Fleming the Democrat ahead by 14 votes.
Washington August 21 The Post Office Department has begun distributing a new style of street letter box to replace the older model. The design features a hidden slot that opens with a knob and raises an internal tray to separate mail into two compartments, preventing theft and weather damage.Boxes will be produced in three sizes and damaged units will be replaced with the new style.
Wauregan Cotton Goods Manufacturing Company, with $1,000,000 liabilities and $2,000,000 assets, has decided to suspend payment and send notes to protest. It operates two mills, Wauregan in Connecticut and Nottingham in Woonsocket, with capitalizations of $600,000 and $300,000 respectively. Thornton worsted mills also went under use amid rumors of losses tied to the Lewis failure.
A Special Telegram from Haxgrispure notes the Knights of Labor Legislative Committee will publish a factual report on the Legislature's action regarding labor bills. Rumors say an announcement ending the strike may come, though many miners did not approve the delegates at the prior city meeting which rejected a 72.35 cents per ton promise. The sentiment spurred discussions with leaders from Bruceville Braidwood Streator LaSalle and other points.
A special telegram from St. Louis reports the Diamond Point Mining and Milling Company seeks a charming lady to join a social set and help promote stock sales. Mrs Turgoose, wife of a man described as insane, reportedly captivated a group of women and helped float stock, allegedly taking $2,000 from her St. Louis visit.
William E Lee, a Forbes Street painter, shot his former employer John T Natcher, a building contractor, at Natchers office on Second Avenue around 2 PM following a money dispute. Natcher, gravely wounded, lay on his back as foreman L McCormick found him after hearing two shots and seeing Lee walk away.
After a quarrel in the Bank of Pittsburg office Billy Lee shot Natcher in the back. Natcher was driven to Homeopathic Hospital where doctors found a bullet had passed through the lung. Lee fled to a warehouse cellar but was captured by police at Central Station with the pistol and two empty shells. He gave a brief statement claiming Natcher tried to do him up and vowed not to allow it.
