Grant Monument Corner Stone Laid At Riverside Park
New York on April 27 observed the seventieth birth anniversary of General Ulysses S Grant with the cornerstone ceremony of a monumental tomb in Riverside Park. A 12 000 seat grand stand and 40 000 spectators heard Dr Chauncey M Depew and remarks by General Horace Porter and the Grant Monument Association president. The cornerstone weighed over ten tons and a naval detachment raised the inscription flags while President Harrison and a presidential party attended. The ceremony featured 1500 to 2000 school children scattering flowers and Mrs Grant attended from the grandstand. A time capsule contained constitutional documents the Bible and military tributes among other items. The president departed for Washington after the ceremonies amid a night of celebratory mood.
