TENTH ON THE LIST Superintendent Baker reports 1889-90 health bureau
Superintendent Thomas Baker of the Bureau of Health completes the year ending February 1 1890 with reports from the Vital Statistics Sanitary Inspector and Meat and Milk Inspector. The department requests printing of its full annual report and outlines a 1889-90 appropriation of 39500 with 3000 transferred to the Police Bureau leaving 36500 expended. Receipts total 25720 far below prior years due to lower cesspool permit fees. Bedford avenue and Francis street smallpox hospital in Thirteenth ward is kept in first class condition after repainting. Suggested improvements include a new ambulance wagon and two fire extinguishers. Baker also proposes several small isolated hospital buildings for destitute patients with infectious diseases, noting Charities will not take these cases. Only three of them.
