License Court Lottery Brings Grief and Banter on Smithfield
Citizens gathered as license court judges announced outcomes from a crowded field. One applicant lamented his loss with a grim quip about a lost license while others mocked fate and toasted chances. A well-dressed stranger offered sympathy as a saloon keeper’s misfortune drew laughter. The piece notes broad public reaction to a thousand blanks and ends with a line about feeding the county treasury.

Revenue collector notes rise in license sales amid saloon increase
Internal Revenue Collector Warmcastle reports this year’s license revenue will rise by 1200 to 1400 dollars compared with last year due to more saloons. He says the gain offsets revenue declines from two years ago when a published list chilled speak easy operators and deterred them from obtaining United States licenses, a stance reinforced in court by Judge Ewing who said holding a United States license implied liquor selling, regardless of state licensing.
