Survivors recount the Samoa tragedy as a powerful wind and wave disaster unfolds, leaving a stark page in naval annals for two nations. They describe wrecks, loss, and the seaborne calamity that tested ships and crews.
The Apia hurricane over March 15 17 wrecked ships of American German and British fleets with 150 lives lost and 3 million in property. Natives aided rescues as vessels grounded and crews battled flood and wind in the worst Pacific storm recorded.
Describes Apia harbor in a semi circular bay on the north side of Aoala with a coral reef barrier forming six entry gateways. The inner reef caused wrecks as ships were driven back by wind and the bay holds little anchor space amid shoals and offshore reefs near the American Consulate.

A bolt of lightning struck the chimney of the Al Honset family home in Hazelton during a storm. The fire spread from the bed to bedding before a neighbor extinguished it. Mrs. Honset was stunned but unharmed. A lump of the bolt lay in the window sill, resembling lead.
Harrissone April 13. Mr. Wherry learned from The Drs PaToH that Republican leaders may bring out an anti-discrimination bill. He notes he held back his bill awaiting the general revenue bill and introduced it himself after delays. He insists his aim is constitutional reform, not Democratic vote-getting.
A Washington correspondent notes 141 bills reported to the House, only 54 passed, and the general appropriation bill remains in committee. With seven days rule and 16 working days left, lawmakers must race to advance the bills before adjournment, as a New York trip and Washington Centennial plans loom.
A telegram from Hantrorp reports Swift the condemned wife murderer asked to use the prison chapel organ. Accompanied by a deputy sheriff he played and sang Moody and Sankey hymns for an hour and a half, ending when he signaled departure. The deputy was moved by the performance.
The report says Bill Thompson and his gang occupied a Colorado village from Monday night to Tuesday, disarming residents and seizing guns and cartridges. They burned one building but extinguished the flames, aimed to capture Dr Brown and Editor Daniels without finding them, and promised a return. Thompson vows to kill the men on sight.
At Mt Moriah Baptist Church in Lancaster county deacon Anderson McIlwaine, 70, was shot and killed by Calvin C. Clyburn after an altercation over a betrayal accusation. Clyburn fired a seven shot revolver, died minutes later, and was jailed after surrendering to the sheriff.

New York April 13 Engineer Bald win one of the oldest on the Brooklyn Elevated road was discharged after discovering low boiler water while speeding toward the bridge. He dumped the fire onto the street to avert an explosion causing damage to coats hats and awnings as the train rolled on with insufficient steam.
Sharon April 13 Frank Jones a Greenfield merchant eight miles east of Sharon attempted to cut his throat in two places this afternoon. He was found in a coathouse weak from loss of blood with two razors nearby and is in critical condition.
