A fire gutted the four acre Hubbard & Co. site at Forty-eighth Street and the Allegheny Valley Railroad in Lawrenceville. The blaze caused hundreds of job losses, damaged 600000 pounds of shovel stock steel, and destroyed the ox and shovel factory with $165000 insured. The firm plans to rebuild after settlements, with about 250 workers affected and a $500000 estimate, later revised.

Fire smothered after sand tossed on blaze at twenty eighth street

The fire broke out at a gate of fish oil and bone flames and was finally subdued by shoveling sand. H. P. Hubbard discovered it while acting as watchman. Delays hindered fire response as Engine 9 burst a suction and Engine 15 broke an axle en route. Captain Brophy and police kept crowds back during the effort. The J. W. Arrott agency lists several insurers and Hubbards hold about $10,000 on the first four companies. Prior agents and other names noted with about $5,000 each in Orient and Queen lines.
