In Pleasant, April 3, the Connellsville coke region remains unsettled as 1,200 State troops guard Morewood and nearby works after a deadly shooting. Operators plead protection from county authorities while deputies and militia face divergent loyalties and ongoing rumors of further violence.
The dispatch notes volatile mood in Cutet Commend with strikers tied to recent demonstrations and shootings. Five militia companies from the Tenth Regiment man Morewood works while Eighteenth Regiment stays in reserve. Adjutant General McClelland confirms full cartridge supply as leaders seek orderly restraint.
A staff correspondent from Pleasant reports that strikers intend to retaliate against deputies by disarming or arresting them as they prepare to resume action. The move signals intensified labor unrest and potential clashes in the area around Pleasant.

Five companies with about 50 men each guard key sites including the main station, lower shaft, and a log house near the Morewood store. Captain Laird commands Companies B and I. D and H guard the lower shaft. C guards the road to Stonerville with Colonel Hawkins in charge.
At 8 oclock this morning the Coroner s inquest over the bodies of the dead strikers was continued. Attendance grew from sparse to crowded as labor leaders and sheriff Clawson s counsel ex Governor Latta arrived. The first witness John Row baker testified he was not present at the trouble and has never been disturbed by the strikers.
Testimony in the Mt. Pleasant inquest describes a riot at Morewood and the Morewood works where deputies fired on the crowd after halting at the gate. Witnesses recalled shots near the store and depots, with seven men killed and many wounded as labor conflict escalated.
Special telegram from Pleasant April 3 reports fears for Captain Loar of this city as his men allegedly shot strikers. Threats circulate and a bodyguard accompanies him while Captain Loar shows no fear. Colonel Hawkins comments on Loar's conduct amid unrest and scrutiny.

They will be taken to Scottdale by the 2 30 train. Most likely services will be held at the Polish Church before burial. Countrymen and fellow workers show sorrow as two bodies have been claimed by their families.
Rumor says five more victims will be buried at county expense. Peter Wise and labor leaders expected to speak at the funeral amid talks of actions to prevent any chance of unrest.
Prominent night patrols by the Tenth Regiment at Morehead keep the town alert as two meetings attract large crowds. Sentries halt and fire signals prompt the line on Mt Pleasant Morewood hill. New York April 3 Andrew Carnegie stockholder in the coke mining firm whose Morewood works were attacked says little about the incident. He notes few details as most rioters were Hungarians and asserts workers are paid well elsewhere. He expects no further trouble.

Charles Meyers was acquitted on an insanity plea in the January 1, 1888, murder of James E. Weir in Independence after a 36 hour jury deliberation. This marked Meyers second trial. the first had found him guilty. He will be sent to an insane asylum.
The popular opposition candidate loses in Sligo with a smaller than expected margin. The struggle continues as no reunion of rival factions is anticipated and maps of any such reunion are described as nonexistent.
In Sligo Collery gains 3 261 to 2 493 over Dillon a 768 majority as 5 734 of 8 779 voters cast ballots. Parnellites claim encouragement despite priestly influence and a divided McCarthyite coalition. Parnell travels to England after the Dublin result amid furor over alleged abuse and misrepresented telegrams.
In Milwaukee on April 3 the Juneau Democratic Club banquet drew about 300 leading Democrats from the city and state. Senator-elect Palmer and Governor Peck were unable to attend. Black spoke on the Democratic Party as the party for political reform, William G. Ewing of Illinois discussed the tariff, and B. G. Schley spoke on the party's democracy.
