Eureka residents woke to a morning shooting at Mrs Brown’s restaurant near the International Hotel. John Marsh confronted J W Flemming known as Multitudy, firing twice after a quarrel over two dollars in back pay. Marsh was wounded in the right breast, Flemming fled, police intervened, both men detained briefly.

The patient suffered two flesh wounds from bullets lodging in the leg and thigh area and was in severe shock. Doctors Cram and Bishop treated him as he remained critically ill by midnight. Flemming was arrested and jailed after giving a full, consistent account of the incident.

Miner Fatally Stabbed in Salt Lake Saloon
The first holiday homicide in Salt Lake occurred in a Commercial Street beer saloon. William J. Jones, a miner from Dry Canyon, was stabbed by David Phillips after a liquor fueled quarrel. Jones died within minutes. Phillips fled but was captured and jailed. An inquest was planned for this afternoon.
