The Making of Pinehurst A Healthful Village
Pinehurst began in June 1895 when James W. Tufts of Boston drove the first stake to mark the town center. The tract, near Moore County, NC, promised a refuge of peace with pine forests, clean springs, and drainage that wards off malaria and typhoid. Olmsted landscape design guided curving streets, a village green, pure water, electric lighting, an electric railway, a deer grove, and a growing hotel and cottages. The Holly Inn led a rapidly expanding village with a big sewer system, new houses, and amenities that drew visitors of varied means, while social and religious facilities, a village school, department store, post office, and The Outlook office knit the community together.
