A man named Mr. Mann plans to go to North Carolina to seek fortune in silk-worms mushrooms and poultry. He travels toward Moore County to a dry healthy sand hill region with cheap land and good water, meets Northern travelers on the rail line, and experiences the eerie night in pine woods as he nears his destination. The story ends with an encounter near a three story white house and an offer of shelter, with the continuation promised in the next issue.
