American History in Ballads Lecture at Village Hall
A large audience heard Rev Dr Edward Everett Hale discuss American history in ballads at Village Hall. Miss Eugenie Upham sang two year-songs, raising 28 dollars for the Lend a Hand society. Hale cited Lowell and Bradstreet to argue New England ballads are scarce and real ballads arise from a literate age, with several historic verses discussed including Anne Dudley, Anne Hutchinson, and the Ballad of Bloody Brook.
