Geology of North Carolina Separated by Coastal and Piedmont Belts
North Carolina's geology shows Coastal Plain soils and seashore features in the east transitioning to Piedmont and Mountain regions in the west. The Coastal Plain lies east with sands silts and occasional limestone beds along rivers, while the Piedmont hosts red sandstones, coal beds, and granite belts. Crystalline rocks form major belts with folds and veins of gold silver copper and iron ores, especially near Davidson, Guilford, Burke, Mitchell, and Caldwell counties.
