Ancient Surveys and the Pinehurst Founding
Ancient surveys in Moore County NC differed from later methods, with boundaries marked by pine knots or pines. The Pinehurst area was settled by Presbyterians from Wilmington, who followed the Cape Fear river, and James W. Tufts later purchased 5,000 acres to found Pinehurst. Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot designed the town, with Warren Manning directing landscape work, and plans connected to Southern Pines by tramway then electric tram. A detailed topographic map and infrastructure plans were drawn, showcasing streets, water, sewer, and power. The Seaboard Air Line issued a supplement promoting regional advantages for farmers, merchants, and manufacturers.
