Commodore Smith Shares Pine Tree Mystery At Andover

Berkshire hotel manager Mr F B Kimball received a marked clipping from Pinehurst visitor Commodore Smith. It reports a 150 year old pine near Andover’s Shawsheen river yielded 1500 feet of lumber before a stone the size of a hen egg was found in the heart of the log two feet from the end. The stone, dark and discolored wood surrounds it, was located 26 feet above ground. Smith holds the stone and invites curiosity seekers to view it.
