Pinehurst Opens Season with Williams and Gates Contending
The Carolina golf tour at Pinehurst drew a large field in ideal conditions. Howard Wrenn of Chicago won the first division trophy after a tight match, defeating Athol Denham 3 and 2. Shannon IT moved swiftly in the second division, beating Spencer Waters and Charles Horton on his way to a glorious finish. Clarence Hobart led the qualifying round with 85, 45 out and 40 in, but the day belonged to Gates who traded threats with Howard Phillips and other top players as spectators watched a North versus South battle unfold on Pinehurst links. The event marked the start of the season as Moore County Golf Association organized the showcase.
