Hunting diamonds inSs A Jungles

William J LaVarre James MacDonald and Dudley sailed from New York to search for the undiscovered source of diamonds in British Guiana. They will outfit at Georgetown travel up the Essequibo river then 170 miles up a Mazaruni tributary to explore the Pacaraima watershed on the Guiana Venezuela border. They believe chimneys in this area yield diamonds found in sporadic districts. Diamonds in British Guiana date to the mid 19th century with no systematic exploration beyond alluvial mining. South American diamonds are among the world’s purest stones as mining costs rise elsewhere, a new field discovery is seen as timely.
