Treasury secrets of war era cotton losses stuns readers
A Washington diary reveals how the division of abandoned lands and property held millions in cotton and other assets from the Civil War era. It notes $13,000,000 tied to Southern property, with $174,000 in one cotton bale case and $109,000 from a foreign seizure. The piece describes how owners, many loyalists, lost track of their claims as Union officials kept funds in trust, and recounts related stories of damage and recovery attempts.
