Query Meets Equalization Board In Pickens

W G Query of the State Tax Commission told Pickens county’s board of equalization that assessments are low compared to other counties. He urged focus on manufacturers, lumber dealers, livestock, auto trades, merchants and live stock owners. A follow up meeting is planned for the first week in April. The list includes county and township assessors led by Joel H. Miller and P T Nelson among others.

Delinquent Taxes Rise Across County by Township

County tax books close with unpaid taxes moved to execution. This year 6552 pinese receipts remain on the books versus 500 last year. A township by township comparison shows Liberty Central Hurricane Pickens Dacusville Pumpkintown Eastatoe and others with varying delinquencies, totaling 552 this year and 500 last year.

The Pickens County Singing Association will hold its regular spring convention at Griffin church on Saturday and Sunday April 7 8. The public is invited and delegates and contributions are requested. A lunch will be served both days.

Pickens County Highway Commission Holds First Meeting

The Pickens County Highway Commission met last Monday at Liberty and Orphanhead. J. F. Banister C. L. Cureton and R. F. Lenhardt elected Cureton as chairman and treasurer. They applied for a surety bond and cannot transact major business until approved. They will inspect Greenville county roads and oversee the $250,000 bond issue for Pickens roads from the recent legislature.

Fire destroys Easley First Baptist church building

A Sunday morning blaze completely leveled the Easley First Baptist Church, a brick veneer structure built five years ago at a cost of 8 000 and insured for 5 600. Rev. N K Williams leads the congregation. The wind hindered suppression, but nearby buildings were protected.

Greenville hosts first Automobile and Fashion Show

Greenville plans its first Automobile and Fashion Show from Wednesday night to Saturday night. The event showcases spring merchandise styles and every car make sold in Greenville. Baseball games feature Furman University against Greensboro league teams as visitors pour in.

The Lasley Singing convention will meet at Georges Creek church next Sunday. The public is cordially invited. Gillespie and Baker Vow in Pickens County

The Pickens Sentinel reports the marriage Sunday evening the 18th of Carter C. Gillespie and Ida Baker both of Pickens county. Rev W C Seaborn officiated in Praters area where guests admired a generous dining table following the ceremony. Gillespie, a farmer, and Baker, a Praters school teacher, begin married life together.

Pickens Becomes Dry. Whiskey Shipped Elsewhere

Pickens has been dry for about two weeks as Southern Express Co offices are absent and refuse whiskey to Pickens. Residents must route orders to nearby towns with offices and collect in person. After April 25 the quart-a-month law may end ordered liquor in Pickens, given the long delivery detour.
