On Along Pickens Route 3 farmers progress steadily with crops generally in good shape despite late cold and wet spring. A heavy rain and hail storm visited Cateechee on June 19 causing major crop and vegetation damage from Lay's bridge to Maw's bridge on the Twelve Mile river. Hail lingered near Warren Hopkins' home for days, while other areas escaped the worst. Crops elsewhere look good and free of grass. The piece also notes memorial services at Golden Creek church led by Rev. T. F. Nelson with singing and a talk by Dir. J. S. Leopard on "the Resurrection." Born to J. A. Whiten of Norris, a son Jim. Sunday school plans a July 4 picnic near Cateechee.
Route 6 News reports George Sutherland of the Griffin section lost a fine milk cow to a lightning strike on Tuesday afternoon, July 3. The county scrape hands are camping at Pumpkintown doing needed work. Andrew Medlin visited Greenville on business. W O W Lendricks is cutting timber near Table Rock mountain. Friends extend sympathy to Mr and Mrs W T Deans on the loss of their brother Morgan of Greenville.
Hot July weather improves crops though cotton is poor, corn and peas thrive where replanted. Mt Carmel held a large Sunday with preaching, singing, and a WMU meeting attended by several members. Leigh Hunt's two children are ill. Mrs Freeman Tate of Greenville was buried at Mt Carmel with funeral by Rev I N Sanders.
Mrs. Jessie Llobert Robertson Martin wife of Moe T. Martin and mother of Wesley Martin died Thursday at her mother-in-law’s Greenville home after a brief illness. She was a Central Baptist member and survived by her husband, son, and several sisters. Funeral held Friday at 11 in Greenville conducted by Rev. S. Matthews. interment in Springwood Cemetery.

A Thursday lawn fete on the court house square benefited the Red Cross with home made candy ice cream drinks and patriotic decor. A gypsy tent a crab bag and a cakewalk produced winners Nannie Porter Floride Carey Bob Richey Houston Craig who donated the cake to Pickens Mill Band as about 38 dollars was raised.
Mrs. Kannie Murphree died June 27 at her home near Mile Creek church after a six month illness. She leaves husband J Lawrence Murphree and six children, was born May 23 187?, taught at Mile Creek graded school, and belonged to Keowee Baptist church. Funeral was led by Rev G I Murphy with burial at Keowee cemetery.
The Twelve Able River association schedules a two day session at Holly Springs Baptist Church on July 28 29 with devotional talks led by moderators and ministers. A sermon by Chas B Atkinson opens the Friday events followed by queries on church duties Bible reading and pastoral field formations. Saturday includes devotionals and a morning Sunday school discussion led by the moderator and J M Bolding with a Sunday afternoon singing program coordinated by I M Bonpina and Davin Vickery.
The Women’s Missionary Union will hold its quarterly meeting at the Baptist church Sunday the 15th. The program opens with devotional service led by Mrs. John Chiles and Mrs. J. M. Gantt gives welcome with Mrs. J. J. Tolland responding. Reports from societies follow before addresses on missions. Mrs. Willis discusses the supreme task of Southern Baptists and Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. LaBoon attend Dora Richey Elrod funeral in Anderson County last Tuesday.
Pickens Red Cross chapter held a July meeting in the Red Cross Room over the Keowee Bank. Sixty-one members, several mills and local towns contributing fabric and funds, plus plans to send sixteen equipped medical packs to France by August first. The appeal urged support for soldiers and humanitarian relief as American service members fight in Europe.
Regular preachings schedule lists Rev S M Jones as pastor in charge of Pickens circuit with services on the first Sunday at Porter's Chapel 11 o'clock and Mt Tahor 9 30, second Sunday Bethel 11 and Salem 3 80, third Sunday McKinney's Chapel 11, fourth Sunday Gap Hill 11 and Twelve Mile 8 30. Rev C R Anderson contributes by preaching at Friendship on the second Sunday 11 and New Hope on the fourth Sunday 1 o'clock.
