The June meeting in Chesterfield County featured calmer rhetoric as Governor Tillman and General Butler spoke on national issues and silver reform. Evans and Ellerbe clashed over March conventions and past votes while urging unity among reformers amid a draining rain and steady crowd.
Six masked white men halted Savannah Florida and Western Train No. 6 near Slomerville, blew open the express car with dynamite, and escaped with 1222 dollars. Authorities, led by Sheriff Hurst, pursue footprints toward Okemokes Swamp as a posse and hounds close in.
J Henry Slackerman a young white man committed death by own action five miles from Charleston. He tied a bar of iron around his waist and went into the river and shot himself leaving a note to his mother and father saying he was tired of living and would bury himself, signed ackerman to live your truly and beloved son.
John Logan Jamison Jr assistant overseer on the Thompson orphanage farm near Charlotte was killed by lightning while sheltering under a poplar tree with his mule. He had wed Math Brown last Wednesday, a ward of the orphanage, leaving her a widow after five days of marriage.
At Bennettsville South Carolina on June 27 a subdued gathering heard Governor Tillman Senator Evans and others discuss reform alliances and the sub treasury plan. Speakers argued for state control of finance railroads and schools while urging unity and warning against party splits amid a crowded political field.
At a special meeting on June 1 Charleston German Fusiliers voted to join Augusta German Guards for German Day. Captain Henry Schachte sought state leave to travel to Augusta on June 27 but Assistant Adjutant General J. Gary Wards refused, citing that the unit was under charges and could not leave the state.
In London on June 26 the Point Y Peidd mine explosion's death toll climbs to 251, far above earlier estimates of 200. Many victims are unrecognizable, miners' families gather, and rescue efforts are hindered by blocked galleries and fallen horses.
Santo, the assassin of President Carnot, was brought before examining Magistrate Benoist for a second time. He said he killed out of opposition to tyranny and described stabbing Carnot with a concealed dagger during the carriage encounter. The judge did not respond to whether the president was dead as the examination lasted four hours.
A horse drawn buggy driven by Mrs Yelena Welsh panicked on Darlington street forcing a run to the Wilmington, Columbia and Augusta tracks. Mrs Fannie Nachman died within minutes after the buggy collided with an electric pole near the courthouse. Mrs Welsh suffered a severe scalp wound but may recover.
In Yemassee South Carolina on June 20 a trio of black men were caught breaking into Charleston and Savannah Railroad freight cars near Central Junction. Bram White, a road employee, chased them to Yemassee and aided in pursuit. They robbed a man at the Yemassee depot, beating him, and were later captured at Coosawhatchee after a brief gunfight. They were jailed in Hampton County. Operator Cummins aided the capture.
