Excellent Reasons for a Veto
The president vetoes a bill authorizing a Hudson River bridge at upper New York City. He cites that it allows piers in the river and would interfere with river commerce. An expert opinion favors a single span, and the New York Legislature bans piers in its charter. The measure would let the bridge company overcharge for mail transport, and Congress has already granted a charter for a similar single-span bridge to another company.
