A comparative list from The Pickens Sentinel dated April 28, 1887 shows granulated sugar at 6 to 10 cents per pound, bacon 9 to 24 cents, hams 16 to 25 cents, lard 8 to 25 cents, corn 60 cents to $1.75 per bushel, oats 65 cents to $1.00, flour $6–$13.50 per barrel, and kerosene 10 to 20 cents per gallon, with notes on higher modern prices and a smaller past newspaper.
A Washington dispatch tells of a Hampton cavalry survivor and father of Missouri representative Hamlin who writes to the president offering his services in defense of the government. He recalls Civil War service with Wade Hampton, claims high riding skill, and notes being 53, with good hearing eyesight and weight 174 pounds, asking to be commanded if needed.
A local notice compiles odd town chatter from Pumpkintown and Pleasant Grove. A resident claims to seek Pumpkintown for safety amid fears of war, while residents discuss radium jokes, a Ford purchase by W D Hendricks Jr, and Sunday school reorganizing with W I Hardin named superintendent. The weekly market note reports corrected figures from Folger Thornes and Co. The spring sale and turkey dinner hosted by the Methodist church ladies last Friday raised more than $60 for the church fund.
Little Eustatoe Lois, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Winchester, has improved enough to attend Sunday school after months. J. W. Batson of Greenville visited J. R. Meece. Elzie Meece returns from eight years away on a ten day vacation and works as a private detective for Uncle Sam. Farm work lags with corn planted but not cotton. grain will be light. Several Meece family members and neighbors share notes on travel, work, and progress as war concerns loom.
Mt Carmel notes farm work across the county progresses though much land remains to be prepared and planted. The C C club was entertained by Mrs H P Haley with an ice course and cake. Miss Byvan Holecombe joined the Ford party while Grady Williams joined the Chevrolet group.

The Pickens Sentinel, the official county paper and oldest in Pickens County, celebrates forty six years next week. It boasts the largest circulation and broad news coverage from general to war and state updates. Subscriptions are $1.50 yearly, $1.00 six months, 50 cents four months.
About fifty farmers and twenty five ladies attended a court house gathering last Saturday where Rev. W. H. Mills of Clemson College and ex Governor M. F. P. Ansel urged increasing food production. They warned that even high cotton prices may not ensure food from other regions and urged self sufficiency. Fant will preach in Vickens Methodist Church on the first Sunday in May at 3 30 p m with a 2 30 song service by Prof. R. M. Bolding. public invited.

Rev J J Willis recently closed a series of Cateechee Baptist church meetings. Fifty nine accessions were recorded with baptisms last Sunday at 8 30 p m near the mill in a large congregations gathering. Rev C Courtney from Rescue orphanage spoke at 7 80 that night and a collection benefited the Columbia institution.
A Saturday gathering at Mrs. Chastain's home marked by singing and conversation. About one o clock attendees shared food prepared by local ladies. Celebrants Mr. White at 59 and Mrs. Chastain at 56, with about 66 attendees from Pickens, Greenville and Anderson counties.
On a Sunday night a barn at John Melton’s on H Lang Clayton place near Liberty burned, destroying fodder hay farming tools and eight mules with an estimated loss around 3000 dollars and no insurance. At Glenwood Mills a fire Thursday night between 10 and 11 o'clock destroyed T Hunnicutt’s barn, a horse and a nearly new Ford. loss about 40 dollars with no insurance.

A South Carolina petition seeks to declare Pickens mayor C L Cureton's office vacant claiming he became county highway commissioner after swearing in as mayor. Judge Mendel Smith set April 28 1917 for Cureton to appear in Greenville to show cause. Cureton says he planned to resign before the suit and will likely resign at the next city council meeting.
The Twelve Mile River Association sets a two day meeting with Fall Creek Baptist Church Oconee county on April 28 29 1917. Introductory sermon Rev R F Jones Saturday 11 am followed by discussions on true Baptist mission spirit and the executive committee duties opened by Rev J A Bond Rev I I Murphree with afternoon sessions. Arthur Allen, a checking clerk in the munitions department of the Richmond Locomotive Works in Richmond, Virginia, is visiting his father T. BR. Allen in Pickens. He recently mashed his foot when a workman dropped a nine inch sheet, and he was granted a week’s leave of absence due to the injury.
