Voyage and War News From a Transatlantic Passage 1810
A verbose 1810 correspondence from the Keowee Courier chronicles a lengthy New York reception, a sea voyage to Liverpool aboard the New York, and stops at Cowes Portsmouth and Bremen. The narrator notes storms, pilotage, shipboard routines, distant horizons, and reflections on literature, culture, and politics of the era, including Italy’s war, Napoleon, and looming Southern secession anxieties. It also records travels through Drosilon, Magdeburg, and Leipzig, encounters with travelers, and observations of towns, landscapes, and ports along the Weser and Elbe rivers, culminating in political letters about the Union and Confederate questions.
